The city of Renton is surviving the economic downturn so far. We are able to keep services strong and avoid staff layoffs. Most residents will not notice much change. However, our largest employer has so far been able to maintain a strong order backlog and keep up its impressive production rate. This has kept our job base strong, and helped local businesses keep these workers as valuable customers of our restaurants and retailers. This article gives some indication that these good times may not hold if the economy does not rebound soon.

Boeing likely will suffer from global airline industry slump
Revenue decline will mean cutbacks in plane orders
By JAMES WALLACE
P-I AEROSPACE REPORTER
GENEVA — The global airline industry, which has ordered record numbers of jets from Boeing and Airbus during the past three years, is facing the worst revenue crisis since the end of World War II, the International Air Transport Association warned Tuesday.
Speaking of airplanes:

Mr. Yoon’s reaction is heartbreaking.
I would be willing to retire and give my job new a young person recently hired. Darn I am to young.
Ben, I would say Mr. Yoon’s response is both honorable and heartbreaking. Thank you for adding that article.

Greenfresh
Has Greenfresh gone out of business? I heard they did and have tried calling and no one answers the phone.
Re: Greenfresh
I drove by to check this out about lunch time today. The lights were turned off. There’s a sign on the door saying, “Closed due to power outage.” There’s a stand-up sign approaching the door that says something like, “Closed temporarily. See you soon!” Randy, any news? Greenfresh is a great grocery!
Re: Greenfresh
No! I don’t know what is going on. Thanks for the update Elizabeth. On Monday I can call some folks at city hall and see if they know what is going on.
Re: Greenfresh
Closed due to failure to pay their power bill. They’re out of business. Sad, but expected in this economy.
Re: Greenfresh
That would be most unfortunate, if that’s the case. This is a great grocery and hasn’t been open all that long. Perhaps investors can inject additional capital to help it through this time? I used to bank a number of the groceries in the region and there can be some real challenges, especially seasonal. It was sad to see Nick ‘n Willy’s Pizza in Renton also close as they’d been open less than a year. Let’s be sure we’re shopping at and supporting our local businesses.
Re: Greenfresh
They are out of business because they didn’t pay their power bill. I have heard this from very reputable sources. Did anyone seriously shop there regularly? No one in Renton that I know of did. They were too overpriced and too limited in their selection. And, who wants to go to Skyway. That was the fundamental problem. The location, location, location.
Re: Greenfresh
When they first started – I felt their prices were very much like Trader Joes and I fell in love with the place. After a few weeks – there was a bump in prices and I lost interest, and made a habit of stocking up on their unique products once a month. Now and then, I would but a deli sandwich and some China Cola, and have a picnic with my children at Kiwanis park – you can watch the airplanes from there and there’s a weird 70’s dodecahedron thing.
Kiwanis Park
…
About a year ago they started giving away $5 gift certificates to get business, and recently they tried to extend the Renton Farmer’s Market to their parking lot.
You could tell it was a labor of love, and I’m really sad to see people who gave it their all not have make it.
…
Their location sucked – not enough traffic and I bet the lease was expensive.
