The Seattle Times ran a story on the aggravating sunken dry docks sitting off shore in Renton, a few hundred yards from the new Seahawks headquarters.
“We can’t afford to educate our children, but we can waste money on things like this,” Renton Mayor Denis Law said with disgust.
This is fascinating to me… movie-makers will have to chose their villains carefully in the new information age.
MSNBC pointed out the Russian Communist party members are pretty ticked off about the latest Indiana Jones Movie. They provided a link, which I checked out, (and so far I don’t seem to have the Department of Homeland Security knocking down my door.) The link is full of Russian and English conversation about how unfair it was to Russian Indiana Jones fans to vilify the Russians…many of the Russian fans grew up when Indiana Jones was a fighter of Nazis, something everyone could get behind. I saw the movie, and I personally didn’t think it was that bad. It is set in 1957, and makes many references to the Cold War. The Russians were treated as the enemy in the movie, but they were not depicted as inhumane. And Cate Blanchette was extremely charismatic as the Russian leader looking for the Crystal Skull.
For those of you that have seen this movie…what do you think?
This IS frustrating! We need to see some strong regional and state efforts to better clean up the water in Lake Washington. This is not a problem that Renton can solve.

The water quality check of Coulon on 5/20 by Public Health was not good. They will test again today and we should know the results by early afternoon on 5/23. Depending on today’s test it may be necessary to close the beach over the weekend.
Although the swim area does not open until June 21 Recreation staff is preparing signs in the event of a closure and rec staff will be on duty to monitor the area and keep people out of the water over the weekend.
I will be off on 5/23 and Kris Stimpson will be the point of contact for the Recreation Division. Kris will check with Public Health at 11am or so and will take action if the beach needs to be closed. Kris will also alert the enclosed group one way or the other regarding a closure.

Much of my family and several friends attended the first showing of the new Indiana Jones movie at East Valley 13 last night. The movie was really fun. Harrison Ford did a great job of reprising his role… he was as fun as always. Wise-cracking Indiana Jones, “making it up as he goes along.”
My kids have convinced me that you have to go in costume to these big movie openings, and sure-enough, others were there in costume as well. Here are a few pictures of the event.
Our own Renton-built and Renton designed 737’s remain current for the market, according to this story in Aviation Week. According to the story, there is no clear improvement in technology that would make a new airplane significantly better than the Renton-built most popular jetliner ever, so Boeing is pushing back development of a replacement for more years. With a backlog of orders near 2000, Renton can look forward to tens of billions of dollars of additional products flying out of our city for years to come.
Here is an update that I just recieved via email. This bond issue will keep our school modernization on track. (The Randy mentioned in Ed’s email is Randy Matheson, with the School District). Congratulations to the Renton School District for earning this confidence from a super-majority of Renton voters.

I just finished talking to Randy and today’s results have been posted. As of 3:09 today the Renton Bond is PASSING by 72 votes! Thank you to everyone who has spent one minute on this effort. Your hard work made this victory possible. So many people were so instrumental in making this campaign a success that it would take five seperate e-mails for me to name every person by name but I do want to give extra special thanks to:
Mary Alice: Every time I saw you you were ready to charge ahead. Your boundless energy constantly put gas in my tank.
Marcie Maxwell: Words cant express how much I appreciate you. Your advice and the countless e-mails from past campaigns helped get me up to speed on what was done before.
Pam Teal: Where do I start? We had so many phone calls and meetings. You worked your tail off. Thank you for working with the PTA’s and for being my partner in crime. Who am I going to bug now that we’re done? 🙂

Here is a great story about a Renton product we should all be very proud of.
The Ballard News Tribune provided a touching tribute to our former Utility head Ron Olsen, who died an untimely death following a car accident in Norway on April 29.
I will always remember Ron as a good natured, humorous and extremely capable utilities manager, who worked hard to keep the water flowing in our city. I worked with him on countless utility projects for about twelve years at Renton city hall, and when I think back to these times I remember lots of successes and lots of laughter.

My informed friend (and fellow Rentonite) Rebecca pointed out this story to me. Yahoo news media is doing it’s part to help us sort out fact from fiction. It turns out real archaeologists say they don’t really carry whips.
My son Andy (age 21) asked me how Archaeologists can fight off mummies if they don’t really carry whips. The Yahoo article forgot to cover this question. This is so disillusioning.

City officials got a tour of progress on the Seahawks Training Center in Kennydale earlier today.
It’s an amazing facitlity, that will cost nearly 100 million with land, building and furnishings.
The new facility will allow the team to train and practice year-round. By being so close to Quest field, the Seahawks players and staff can live close to their training site and their playing site, and will get to spend evenings with their families even during the most intense training season… only traveling for away games. And the training facility is the finest in the NFL. Paul Allen and the Seahawks management are going to turn our team into Superbowl champs very soon.
