One of McCain’s letters supporting Airbus

In this letter, John McCain lobbies to remove the questionable European subsidies from consideration (they were a major strike against fairness of the Airbus offer), and he dismisses the importance of ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) rules, because these issues could interfere with Airbus bidding in the 100 billion dollar tanker contract. He also dismisses the Barry Amendment, which is in place to prevent the Department of Defense from procuring certain materials, like titanium, from foreign sources when domestic sources are available.

The London Financial Times: The good old US of A can’t seem to win a trick at the moment

Here’s more of the world view. This was just the lift our European competition needed…provided at US taxpayer expense.

EADS you win

Published: March 3 2008 02:00 | Last updated: March 3 2008 02:00

The good old US of A can’t seem to win a trick at the moment. Its economy is cracking and the dollar is being trumped. Now its own air force has awarded a €35bn contract to build aerial refuelling tankers, not to Boeing, as widely expected, but to a team lead by EADS, the European aerospace and defence group. That EADS’s partner is LA-based Northrop Grumman seems to be no consolation to US politicians fuming over jobs.

How much more grief is our state, even our nation, going to take because of this one guy

I know readers are probably getting tired of this topic…but I am still pretty hot about it. And as a senior councilman in the home of Boeing’s commercial headquarters, I’m going to follow this topic until this issue gets properly reviewed by congress.

Here is the article about Mike Sears, the guy that came from McDonald Douglas and embarrassed those of us working in Seattle by offering a job to an Air Force procurement agent. The question is, do we really want to harm the US aviation business, to the tune of tens of billions in lost contracts, tens of thousands of jobs, and immeasurable losses of competitive position and technology because of this guy?

Do we want to hurt our nation’s biggest exporter more, and significantly harm the one industry we have maintained dominance since the time of the Wright Brothers? We are not talking about making bullets or missiles here….there is no product as complicated as an airliner. Why would our congress want to sacrifice our position in this business because of a crime committed by a transplant from a defunct company 7 years ago?

Many of the reports on the internet and in the news make it sound as if John McCain continued meddling in the documents for this project, in a way that would assist Airbus, right up to the end. If this is true, I want to know how he justifies it.

Frankly, I don’t understand why we buy guns and bullets overseas when we have perfectly good manufacturers in the USA that could use the business. Just because other countries buy weapons from us, that doesn’t mean we need to buy from them. We are a super-power because we are excellent at making weapons, and we have a powerful economy. Once we start shopping around for weapons systems from foreign governments, we start to look like a third-world government. But worse, our own government is now telling the world that Airbus makes a better product, just because John McCain and freinds managed to score a subsidized airplane from a socialist government.

I love France…to me Paris is the most beautiful city in the world, and the people have always been friendly to me. But we do not need to give them tens of billions of taxpayer money, while we are still trying to fund the war in Iraq and trying to avoid a recession.

It is frustrating and foolish.

Here are some key quotes:

“Defense analyst Richard Aboulafia of the Teal Group said it marked the first time in U.S. military procurement — and possibly worldwide — that a government had chosen “a foreign plane over a directly competing domestic product.”

“The U.S. government is bringing an action against Airbus in the World Trade Organization and subsidies should have been taken into account” in this competition, Rep. Norm Dicks, a Washington Democrat, told Reuters.

McCain urged Robert Gates, before he was confirmed as defense secretary, to remove the issue from the terms of the competition, saying it could eliminate one of the bidders from the start.

“McCain wrote a very strong letter to Gates,” Dicks said. “Clearly it was on the side of Airbus.”

Dicks said the Air Force would face tough questions in Congress. “Here we are in a recession and the U.S. government hands such a big contract to the Europeans,” he said.

Wall Street Journal: Obama Expresses Disappointment over Air Force Tanker Deal

Obama Expresses Disappointment over Air Force Tanker Deal

Nick Timiraos reports on the presidential race from Nelsonville, Ohio.

Sen. Barack Obama expressed his disappointment Sunday that Northrop Grumann and the parent company of Europe’s Airbus beat out Chicago-based Boeing Co. for a contract worth up to $40 billion for the next generation of U.S. Air Force refueling tankers.

Obama said it was hard for him to believe “that having an American company that has been a traditional source of aeronautic excellence would not have done this job.” He preempted his comments by saying that he had not examined the deal carefully.

Seattle Times: The Eastside’s edge

Renton and the rest of the Seattle Eastside suburbs have somehow managed to avoid the economic downturn that is clobbering the rest of the nation (knock on wood!) I like to think it is good local government :-), but I’m sure we are also in the right place at the right time.

Here is a story from today’s Times:

The Eastside’s edge

Around the country, local economies are decelerating and home foreclosures are at a record high. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is wearing a groove into the marble floors of Congress, appeasing skittish lawmakers with rate cuts.

But a different mood pervades the cities ringing Seattle — Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Issaquah and Renton — one of hopeful anticipation.

British Telegraph: “The deal, announced on Friday, could prove an embarrassment to John McCain…”

The way the news is going, I think this issue will derail John McCain’s campaign when it runs its course.

I don’t think most people yet realize how unprecedented this contract is, or how small the presumed savings from not leasing were (McCain’s claim-to-fame from 2003) in comparison to the severe economic impacts of promoting European aviation above US industry.

I also don’t understand why promoting american jobs and technology is not a factor in the placing of huge contracts like this. Are we the only nation on earth that does not care about this?

In any case, I think Obama will get the edge he needs from this to make my pre-super-Tuesday prediction prove true. McCain already could count on Alabama as a solid red state, but he just lost Washington and Oregon for sure, and hurt himself severely in California and Kansas. There were forty states that stood to get jobs from the US-built airplane proposal, so any of these could become potential additional swing states.

What do you think?

Dear Councilmembers,

The city of Renton grew by 16,272 residents today with little obvious impact. I spent the evening out with the police last night and it was a relatively quiet . There were many traffic stops, a narcotics arrest and clearly a significant police presence. Those driving the area were certainly aware that Renton Police were in the neighborhood, and the King County Sheriff added extra cars to assist during the transition.

In addition to extra patrol officers today, the Traffic Division has been working the area. They have made some warrant arrests and there was an armed robbery at the Mission Ridge apartments on the Petrovitsky Road. It was apparently a drug-deal gone bad.

I recommend you drive the area if you have not yet done so. It’s quite large and there are a lot of homes, including some very nice neighborhoods. And there are tons of apartments, which have been the focal point of a lot of crime activity. We had adopted a little city!

So far, so good! I’ll let you know if there is any other news this weekend.

Denis

Ugh! McCain gets his wish…. Airbus to make new tanker instead of Boeing in $100 Billion deal

I don’t see how the US government can justify spending up to $100 billion taxpayer dollars ($40 billion procurement, and estimated $60 billion in support/maintenance) for a french product, when the US is perched on the edge of a recession. Furthermore, I don’t see the logic in having anyone other than a US company in charge of spare parts and services for something as strategic as an air tanker.

Airbus has offered to build a new plant in Mobile Alabama, which takes some of the sting out of the announcement, but US labor unions and policy makers should not get too excited yet about this. Even if the plant is built, it will build the 167 tankers over ten years or so and then what….rust away as employees that have relocated to Mobile go jobless? Mobile is a beautiful place with fine people, but its isolated small-town economy can’t easily handle the expansion and contraction that would come from a one-time manufacturing run of this magnitude.

Airbus may suggest that the plant will then be used to manufacture commercial plans, but this will never pass muster with european labor unions, which are among the strongest in the world. France is much more socialist than the United States, and the placement of Airbus manufacturing jobs in Mobile Alabama will generate significants complaints in their population long-term.

I think our US government has just handed Airbus a major leg-up in their competition with US airplane makers.

Sometimes I feel like we US taxpayers are already paying for the military defense of the entire world…. This latest decision now ensures that the French, not the US, get any resultant technological advantages from it.

Here is the story Be sure to read the “sound off” comments by readers at the end

P.S. I mentioned John McCain in the title because he scuttled Boeing’s tanker contract in 2001 after raising concerns about the bidding process. While I understood his concerns, and watched in bewilderment as a former Boeing and former Air force procurement officer went to prison for improper dealings, the time for punishing the other 250,000 hard-working Boeing employees is long over. Furthermore, this decision punishes US taxpayers by giving tens of billions to France as the US enters a recession. Yet even today, new sources are reporting that this deal validates McCain’s position.

Uhmm…Isn’t this pretty much just called a “plant?”

Yes…I think this famed geneticist just invented the tree.

Famed geneticist creating life form that turns CO2 to fuel
Thu Feb 28, 3:56 PM ET

MONTEREY, California (AFP) – A scientist who mapped his genome and the genetic diversity of the oceans said Thursday he is creating a life form that feeds on climate-ruining carbon dioxide to produce fuel.

Geneticist Craig Venter disclosed his potentially world-changing “fourth-generation fuel” project at an elite Technology, Entertainment and Design conference in Monterey, California.

“We have modest goals of replacing the whole petrochemical industry and becoming a major source of energy,” Venter told an audience that included global warming fighter Al Gore and Google co-founder Larry Page.
