We must bring the criminal activity under control in this area. We are already doing emphasis patrols (we budgeted an extra $150,000 in 2007 for Highlands police overtime, and revised our police patrol districts in 2008). Obviously, this threat will be a priority for our police department, given the shooting we had last month on Index.
(I don’t know if the perpetrators were motivated by drug or gang ties, but I would not be surprised. Much of the violence our community suffers is a result of offenders wanting money for drugs, or being impaired by drugs, or both.)
Here is the press release:
RENTON POLICE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA RELEASE
March 23rd, 2008
Contact: Renton Police
Shooting Incident Office: (425) 430-7500
Case #2008-2887
On March 23rd, 2008 at 2:33 a.m., Renton Police responded to a call of shots fired at Jack in the Box, 2813 NE Sunset Blvd. When police arrived, they found two adult males had been shot. Both were treated at the scene and transported to Harborview Medical Center.
The two victims had been involved in a dispute with the suspects in the drive-thru at Jack in the Box. The victims pulled through the drive-thru, parked their vehicle and approached the suspect vehicle. After a brief altercation at the suspect vehicle, one of the suspects produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds striking both victims. The suspects then fled the scene, possibly in a white or silver Honda passenger car.
The Renton Police Department is looking for any information or assistance in identifying the suspects in this incident. Anyone with information that could assist the Renton Police Department investigation is asked to call (425) 430-7500.

Drugs/Gangs?
I don’t see any mention of drugs or gangs in this press release. From what I understand, the shooting on Index also had nothing to do with drugs or gangs.
Re: Drugs/Gangs?
I see no mention of Burger King either.
Re: Drugs/Gangs?
Ugh! I meant Jack in the Box! Thanks for catching that!
What’s perhaps more troubling is the lack of attention that both incidents got/are getting from the media?
And not more than a week or two ago there was something going on just a couple blocks up Duvall that had the county police helicopter cicling overhead for quite awhile and sirens going all over the place. Nothing in the media about that either.
Seems like perhaps $150,000 was insufficient and the Council will need to do more to insure the safety of the citizens here in the Highlands.
I agree
Yes…I am also surprised the items have not attracted more media attention. This does not change how hard we work to resolve these crimes and incidents (I think the Duvall incident was a serious car/pedestrian accident), but it does indicate where we rate in the regional media.
And I also agree that we need even more emphasis. While the Index shooting could have been perceived as an anomaly, the recent shooting just a month later starts to make one concerned about a trend.
We are a small enough town, with a strong enough police force, that we do not have to allow this to continue. I am sure the Mayor and Police Chief are already making plans, and I know the council will back their efforts.
Re: I agree
Does the police department make available incident information to Renton residents in some timely fashion? Right now, the police have yet again set up a perimeter around an area west of Duvall and NE 8th. This is the at least the second time in the last couple weeks and the constant din of the sirens is enough to keep us awake. I know it’s impractical to find out immediately what’s going on, but at least hearing after the fact what happened would provide some level of comfort…or discomfort I suppose.
Re: I agree
Nothing on the official Renton website that I could find…
shooting
I was there that night behind the silver civic, but unfortunately I was distracted by the altercation and did not get a chance to record the license plate… I never thought that driving through to get a burger with my friend would lead to my witnessing attempted murder! I hope that police run a gun registration check on what firearm ejected the bullet casings, and examine the footage caught on the drive through camera (if any useful tape is there) because people that do cowardly things of this nature deserve harsh punishment. It’s a shame that this won’t make it past the police blotter, but I hope that extra cash is put towards looking for these cowards who shoot and run, under the assumption their heinous acts will eventually fall off the enforcement radar. I feel sorry for the parents of the victims – just imagine the feeling they get after recieving a call at 2:30 am saying that their sons were shot.
Re: shooting
i am the girlfriend of the victims cousin they don’t know anything yet on who did it and they both are fortunately fine… one was shot many times but luckily survived, it is a heart breaking time for the family and we’re grateful that there are people in this world that care for people other than themselves, thank you!
Shooting at Jack in the Box
I am a resident in the neighborhood and was disturbed to hear about this. I have seen a lot of graffiti lately as I travel north/south on Edmonds. Is this gang graffiti?
Thank you
Shooting
I too am shocked at the lack of media for this incident. I am a parent of a 19 year old, also a resident of the Highlands. I happen to know that one of the victims is a very respectable young boy that manages the graveyard shift at Jack-n-the Box, and has for many years. As to the “Gang” reference (not this time). There are a lot of versions of what may have happened, we will have to wait until the boys are able to talk and to pray for a full and vigorous recovery.
jack in the box shooting
it would be nice to hear something other than this might be gang or drug related… did it ever occur to anyone that this could’ve been just an altercation between 4 young boys? one of the ones shot is related to me… he’s 18 yrs old and also works at that jack in the box from what i understand… he was shot 4 times… and is in medically induced coma at harborview… he may die… and all you people can say is…”we gotta do something about the gangs and drugs..” how ignorant…. how disrespectful and inconsiderateto speak of these boys as if they don’t matter… did any stop to think that this could’ve been them or one your children? how would you feel if you were at your son’s bed side praying to only hear their voice once again… and someone was just writing about them as if they weren’t a person and just another statistic…? have some sort of compassion
Re: jack in the box shooting
this is very true what your saying they were fine boys and i was lucky to meet one before this happened he is a funny guy and I’m glad he is going to make it and the people responsible will pay either in jail or in hell… God gives people what they deserve and what they can handle the people or person responsible will have to live with what they did
Re: jack in the box shooting
1. An 18 year old man is not a young boy, not in the standard sense of the definition and not in the legal sense.
2. It’s not “just” an altercation if it escalates to gunfire. There’s something else going on, even if it’s not gangs or drugs.
Re: jack in the box shooting
well, the one that was shot the most was the one that instigated the altercation – he did not like a look one of the individuals in the civic gave him, according to the shouting that was going on. Though the shooting that took place was way unacceptable, there definitely was some hot-headed behavior exhibited by the victim that escalated past any reasonable fistfight. The victim punched the suspect’s car, and quite possibly the passenger that shot the young men, which I believe was the unfortunate catalyst. It still doesn’t change the fact, however, that the gunmen are cowards hiding behind the safety of a vehicle and a gun, with the mental capacity to deliberately shoot someone to seriously injure them.
Re: jack in the box shooting
thank u so much they are my causins and thank god they are doing good
Re: jack in the box shooting
I did not mean any disrespect. I had heard that they were taken to Harborview and assumed it was not life-threatening. Due to lack of media coverage regarding this case, many questions arose from it. I was and still concerned about the safety of the neighborhood. I hope they fully recover.
I would recommend that citizens start reading the daily reports at the police station. If the citizens truly were aware of what goes on after dark, they would be very surprised. There are some very bad people in town and some very bad things happen every night. When the citizens are sleeping, the bad people are committing crimes. This is the time when the media is also in bed sleeping. People on drugs sleep during the day and get busy at night when there is less of a chance of getting caught. If you don’t believe me, go out and walk around your neighborhood by yourself at 3am. I don’t think that you will feel very comfortable. These kins of things happen more often than you think. I recommend that you go out riding with a cop on a weekend night and see for yourself.
what was the boys name? i know a couple of people that work in the jack in the box or used to..
to all the people that are and were intrested thank you so much for caring for my brother (the one that got shot twice) and my good friend (the one that got shot five times) me and all my family are very greateful to still have these to boys here. i love them to death and yes they are well now they have both recovered very well.
