Renton and Everett aircraft orders lead the nations strong durable goods orders, providing great news for both Wall Street and Main Street. Record-breaking backorders of Renton’s own 737 aircraft, which promise years of production in the future, are clearly helping our NATIONAL economy. This Florida television station even featured a photo of our own Renton factory when reporting this news from the Associated Press. Here is the Link.
This is a great reminder how important aerospace is to our region and our nation.

Orders for big-ticket manufactured goods turned in a second consecutive strong monthly performance in July, a far bigger-than-expected gain led by a huge jump in demand for commercial aircraft. Tour….
If you know someone in Boeing, it’s pretty easy to get a tour of the Renton plant.
Has anybody asked Boeing to have public tours? We put up with their noise and paint fumes, how about a bit of love…
Potential Machinist Strike
Randy,
I’ve been thinking about the potential machinist strike at Boeing, should they vote to strike this week. What is the potential financial impact on the City of Renton should the machinists strike? I’m thinking the affected families will tighten their belts on shopping, so some drop in sales tax revenues. Are there any taxes paid by Boeing related to the # of employees, etc., that may see a reduction of revenues to the City?
The impact on the City shouldn’t be a deciding factor for the machinists, but I know the City has been affected by the already reduced level of sales and other tax revenues this year. This is an example of managing in a liquid economy: recognizing where people or programs provided to citizens need to be cut back to stay within the levels of revenue brought in, and to find creative ways (that are not disruptive to the neighborhoods and quality of life) to generate additional revenues.
I’d be curious what your thoughts are on the potential financial impact. I hope that Boeing and the machinists come to a contract agreement quickly.
