Randy Corman was first elected at age 31, after beating popular Planning Commisioner Jeff Lukins in a challenging but congenial two-way race. Both Randy and Jeff had previously run for council and both had been finalists for appointment to an open seat prior to their 1993 race. They remain Boeing colleagues and friends. Randy has been re-elected three times for city council, each time running unopposed. Randy ran for mayor in 2003 against 8 year council member King Parker, and 20 year council-member Kathy Keolker. Randy continued to buy appliances from King's store during the year-long campaign. "It was pretty amusing...King would dash around moving his yard signs and bumper stickers out of the way, to show me his washing machines" Randy reports. Randy and King remain close friends. In the year 2000, Randy served as council president. During this time he presided over the appointment of two council members, Dan Clawson and Terri Briere. In 2000 when he was council president, and in the following year, Randy earned a 30% lower salary than all the other council members! This situation arose because a raise had been approved (which takes effect upon re-election) right before four council members ran. The three remaing members, Randy, Bob Edwards, and Tim Schlitzer were to run for re-election two years later When Bob and Tim resigned in 2000, Dan Clawson and Teri Brier were appointed at the higher salary, leaving only Randy at the older salary ($700 per month). Randy is a full time Boeing employee, and is therefore one of the few elected representatives that has utilized virtually no city medical or other benefits beyond his council pay. If Council Member Toni Nelson retires next year as she has indicated, Randy would become both the most experienced Renton Council Member (14 years) and the youngest Renton Council Member (age 45 next year). Randy has served with three different mayors. Randy has served in three different council chambers, and occupied three different offices, in two city hall buildings. "My first office I shared with Bob Edwards, who now Chairs the Seattle Port Commision, and he was a terrific office partner" Randy recalls. |
