The Renton Sonics Arena proposal had even less support than I thought. While Renton was spending money studying it, even SEATTLE was lobbying against it. Here is the article in The Oklahoman

So here’s a thing! For you, Randy, because you don’t have a chat program I can link it to you with.
On the topic of our outing this week, Foxtrot’s Sunday comic was very familiar! http://images.ucomics.com/comics/ft/2008/ft080525.gif
I love the comic! Thanks Rebecca (Sweet Panda)!
money
I hope you are not still spending my money on something that will never happen.

As my last week living in Renton comes to a close, I have a few parting shots. At one point I thought I could help Renton officials maintain or improve the quality of life in the Renton Highlands and the East Plateau, boy was I wrong. 10 years have gone by and nothing has changed for the highlands. The new construction taking place east of union gives me the impression that growth in not under control and is being poorly managed. I’ve lost all respect for the city council. To hear a story about how little you knew about back room dealings with the city of Seattle and the lawmakers in Olympia over an arena that was never meant to be is just icing on the cake. Take Coulon park and water quality. I’m afraid to swim there. You are all a bunch of suck ups looking to serve another term. Name one member who is a stand out? I can’t! The one thing you have gotten right, is knowing how to pat each other on the back without looking totally ridiculous. As far as council members having an open door policy to address any citizens concerns, other than at council meetings, that don’t exist. It’s time to say good by to Renton.
That’s pretty harsh.

That’s pretty harsh. I hope you have a better experience at where wher you are moving.

They’re only human.
Randy… don’t get discouraged my this!
Yes! We all want progress… but we have to realize that the council and the rest of the government only has a small amount of control over what happens. They’re not dictators !!
I’d prefer if they got a bit heavier handed – the city need more governance and less guidance.
BUT.. they the council serves in the best that they can and because I’m not doing anything, I applaud them!
Re: They’re only human.
Thanks for your kind comments Rentonben and Mark.
The “parting shot” comment was pretty critical, but it did not discourage me. In fact, I am in agreement with some of the complaints/disappointments expressed.
With regard to the Highlands, we still have a lot of work to do…. and we have had a citizen task force working on this for the last year. They will be reporting out in June, and we will be anxious to implement their recommendations. I agree that we have waited too long for real change already, but we are going to have to achieve results through zoning, incentives, outreach to the businesses we want, infrastructure improvements, code enforcement, crime prevention, and a lot of hard work. We need to keep the majority of property owners working with us, not against us, for this to be successful. And Rome wasn’t built in a day.
With regard to knowing what the Sonics were up to, the council was left speculating, just like the citizens. This was a complaint we lodged going into the last election. The past mayor got $5000 from Clay Bennett for her re-election, but she got defeated by a Renton council member who wanted more answers before any more Sonics studies were authorized.
With regard to Coulon Beach, I share your frustration with the water quality and intend demand that the State use more of its new clean-water permit money to clean up the Lake! Also, I intend to ask metro to inspect their off-shoer sewer lines if they have not already done so. If we decide the water is bad because of overuse by swimmers (which is unlikely since the problem has already started this season), we may have to find ways to limit park usage during peak weekends to Renton residents.
Best Wishes to the commenter, and thanks again Mark and Ben.
bitter much?
Sounds like someone’s RE speculation didn’t work out. I’m sorry for you. I see quite a few of those around here. Looks like there will be quite a few short sale and foreclosures.
While I hoped that Renton would clean up Highland quicker, this isn’t China where officials can just kick out the “undesirables”. Now with another RE down cycle, it would take even longer. Just another fact of life. The housing density issue has more to do with Growth Management Act than anything else, IMO.
