Following this winter’s big floods, we received news that the Green River Flood Control Dam, known as the Howard Hanson Dam, sustained damage this year and will not be able to fully perform again until repaired. Unfortunately, the repairs are estimated to take two to three years.
All the cities and unincorporated areas along the Green River are concerned about this, as it means a significantly heightened risk of flooding.
The Army Corps of Engineers is providing for a tour next week for affected elected officials to personally inspect the damage, so that we have a more clear picture of the situation. They gave Renton three spots on their tour, which will be used by Councilman King Parker, Councilman Greg Taylor, and me.
I’ll be sure to share my first-hand observations here. I’ll also be soliciting ideas and inputs if there are any decisions to be made about how to proceed with the reconstruction and flood control. I’ll know more after next week.
Meanwhile, I hope that the current storm passes over without pushing everything back to flood stage again. I’m ready for spring.
